Haruhi said flatly, thrusting the manuscript back.
"It's no goo~d?"
Asahina-san raised her voice to a near-scream,

A blockquote

"But I really, really thought about it......"

"Yup, no good. Totally. It doesn't strike any chords."
Learning back on the chief's desk, Haruhi took the pen that had been on her ear into her hand and continued,

Another blockquote

"First, this introduction is too common. 'Long, long ago, in a certain place......' whatever, that's such a stale and ordinary way to start a story. Give it a little more twist. The beginning part should go for the catch, okay? First impressions are crucial."

"But,"
Asahina-san nervously said,

A blockquote in another

"I thought that was how fairy tales are......"
"That mindset is obsolete!"
Haruhi handed on the rejection with a thoroughly self-important air.

"The transformation of ideas is necessary. If you remember hearing this or that some where, think about the opposite first. Then you might just give birth to something new."

This feeling like we were rapidly straying from the point was the result of Haruhi's thought system. It's not like the pick-off motion of a pitcher that let a fast runner get on first base, and I don't think it'll be good if you just do the opposite, either.
"Anyway, this is rejected."

After making it a point to write "retake" over the copy paper of the manuscript with a red pen, she lightly tossed it into a cardboard box beside her desk. Within in the box that had been originally loaded with oranges now was a mountain of wastepaper she had decided to send to the incinerator.
"Write something new."
"Woo............"
Chapter 1 - The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya

High school organize certain activities from time to time, and the high school that I attend held a sports day last month. When Haruhi suggested that the SOS Brigade participate in the inter-club relay race, one of the many competitive events held that day, i felt quite dubious. To make things worse, we ended up actually beating the Athletics club and Rugby club in the relay race in which Haruhi overwhelmed the second place runner by a whole thirteen horses' lengths!...

But what kind of questionnaire? Who would actually be interested in doing this?

Probably no one, I suppose. But since it's been decided, keep up the great work guys!

And so, suffering from apathy syndrome, I walked wearily towards the club room.

In truth, this sort of silly question holds no significance for me. However, if you were to ask me when I stopped believing that the old man wearing the red costume was Santa, then I can confidently say: I have never believed in Santa, ever. I knew that the Santa who appeared at my preschool Christmas party was a fraud, and now that I think about it, every one of my class mates shared the same look of disbelief watching out teacher pretend to be Santa. Although I had never seen mommy kissing Santa Claus, I was already wise enough to be suspicious about the existence of an old man who worked only on Christmas Eve.

However, it took me quite a bit longer to realize that the aliens, time-travelers, ghosts, monsters and espers in those effects-filled 'good guys versus evil organization' cartoons didn't actually exist either. No, wait, I probably did realize, I just didn't want to admit it it. Deep inside my heart I still wanted those aliens, time-travelers, ghosts, monsters, espers and evil organizations to suddenly appear. Compared to this boring, normal life of mine, the world of those flashy shows was much more exciting; I wanted to live in that world too!
